Karen Spicher
Karen Spicher’s interest in single-item manuscripts began with her first position at the Beinecke Library in 1996, when she was hired to co-manage a backlog project addressing cataloging of manuscripts in American and European literature and history. A Beinecke archivist since 1999, she currently concentrates on literary and music collections processing and cataloging of music manuscripts. Karen is cataloging coordinator for Beinecke’s Manuscript Unit, and represents the Unit on Yale-wide cataloging committees.
Karen completed an M.L.S., with archives concentration, at the University of Maryland in 1995. While pursuing her degree, she worked as a graduate assistant in music cataloging at the University of Maryland, and completed internships in music special collections at Maryland and in the Library of Congress Manuscript Division. She holds a B.F.A. in music, violin performance, from the State University of New York at Purchase.
A member of SAA since 1995, Karen is currently chair of the Manuscript Repositories Section, and has served as a Section steering committee member and as co-web liaison. She is currently SAA’s Key Contact for Connecticut, and has served as co-chair of the Performing Arts Roundtable. Her activities in other professional organizations include participation in the revision of Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials, as a member of the Music Library Association/RBMS Joint Committee for Early Printed Music, and service as chair of the New England Archivists Education Committee. She developed and co-presented a workshop on “Cataloging Manuscript Music,” as part of RBMS’s 2004 Preconference in New Haven.
