November 29—At its October 31–November 1, 2023, hybrid meeting in Chicago, the SAA Council:
The Society of American Archivists annually recognizes leaders and achievers in the field of archives. SAA offers a variety of professional recognitions and financial assistance through an awards competition, student scholarships, and the naming of Fellows.
November 7, 2023—The Society of American Archivists (SAA) is excited to announce a landmark moment in its history with the approval of proposed amendments to the SAA constitution and bylaws, as outlined in the briefing paper.
A popular series of children’s books once beckoned youngsters to create their own narratives by selecting from different plotlines. The book allowed readers to construct a different tale each time they started reading, and so the books were called “choose your own adventure” stories. As kids read, they chose from a carefully placed series of options that led them to one part of the book or another.
CHICAGO—Congratulations to the 34 new Digital Archives Specialists (DAS)! These archivists, who represent a variety of repositories around the country, earned a DAS Certificate from the Society of American Archivists (SAA) after completing required coursework within twenty-four months and passing a comprehensive examination in September 2023.
October 24, 2023—In a remarkable leadership shift, the Society of American Archivists (SAA) welcomes Conor Casey, Head of Labor Archives of Washington at the University of Washington Libraries, as its new Council member for the 2023-2024 term. This transition follows the departure of Stephen Curley, who had been instrumental in advancing SAA.
October 6, 2023—SAA has joined the Access to Knowledge Coalition (A2K), which represents educators, researchers, students, libraries, archives, museums, other knowledge users, and creative communities around the globe, to urge the 44th session of WIPO's Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR) to evaluate certain agenda items for their upcoming session in November 2023. The letter specifically identifies agenda items 5, 6, 7, and 8 as areas where further scrutiny and revision are required.
October 2, 2023—Join Society of American Archivists President Helen Wong Smith on October 17 at 12:00 p.m. CT* for a conversation with Archivist of the United States Colleen Shogan about the value of archives and the importance of the archivists and records managers who care for them. Their conversation will be followed by a brief Q&A.
