General Librarian (Special Collections/Manuscripts Processing Librarian)

Required Qualifications: ALA-accredited MLS; significant experience in the appraisal, processing, and description of archival and manuscript materials; knowledge of archival theory, practice, and national and international standards and best practices that govern the arrangement and description of primary source materials, including Describing Archives: A Content Standard, the MARC 21 format, and appropriate thesauri & authority lists used for indexing archival descriptions; familiarity with online and print research tools and methodologies, and ability to use common library and office productivity software applications; strong commitment to technical services in support of public services; excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication, and organizational skills.
Additional Qualifications Desired: Knowledge of Louisiana and American history, particularly the American South, and related disciplines and research methodologies; reading knowledge of French or Spanish; experience providing reference service.
Special Requirements: Ability and willingness to lift 30 pounds.
Responsibilities: Works under the general supervision of the Curator of Manuscripts, using advanced technical knowledge and skills for independent decision making; analyzes incoming acquisitions and accessions collections; creates essential management data and makes decisions about how the materials will be physically preserved; arranges and describes manuscript collections; creates finding aids and original MARC-AMC records for those collections; trains and supervises one or more graduate assistants; provides training and supervision for other staff and student workers, as necessary; participates in providing public services at Special Collections service points.
