Roth Resigns from SAA Council

James Roth, who was elected to a three-year term on the SAA Council in 2014, has resigned from the group for personal reasons. The Council has determined that the vacant position will be included in the general election conducted in March/April 2016. Read more.

SAA Opposes Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement Provisions

Read SAA’s new issue brief on “Archivists and the Trans-Pacific Trade Agreement,” which concludes that, “…the TPP trade agreement contains a number of provisions that seriously upset the balance that is fundamental to effective copyright law and thereby threatens the archival mission in the U.S. and in other Pacific Rim countries.”

SAA Comments on Copyright Office’s Mass Digitization Pilot Program

“For the vast bulk of what is in archives, mostly unpublished or rare materials where copyright claimants do not exist, ECL [extended collective licensing] would be unhelpful, irrelevant, unduly burdensome, and a disservice to the communities that archives serve.” Read SAA President Dennis Meissner’s September 23 letter to the Register of Copyrights (drafted by the Intellectual Property Working Group) here.

Dues Increase Proposal Under Review

The SAA Council voted at its May 2015 meeting to propose to the membership a dues increase, effective July 1, 2016. Based on member feedback at (and since) the August 22 Annual Membership Meeting in Cleveland, the proposed dues schedule currently is under review. An all-member referendum on the increase will be conducted in the fall.

Member Affinity Groups Proposal: Thanks for Your Comments!

Thanks to the more than 50 individuals and component groups that responded to the call for comments on the SAA Council’s Member Affinity Groups proposal. Council members will consider all feedback at their November meeting and will issue a second draft for comment.

Comment Deadline Extended: Member Affinity Groups Proposal

August 26, 2015--In light of significant comment at ARCHIVES 2015, the Council has extended the deadline for member comments on a proposal to change SAA's member affinity group structure. Read more here. The new deadline for comments is Tuesday, September 15.
